3 Secrets to Supercharge Your Learning
Have you ever wondered why your student struggles in their studies? Or how you can best support them, in order to set them up for success long term?
By teaching your child or student the “right” study skills promoted by Inspired Learning Systems; skills that are scientifically proven to work, you will not only foster their confidence and reduce their anxiety, but you will also provide tools for them to become a self-starter.
Students who have mastered study skills have transformed their grades to A’s & B’s, have gone from disorganization to responsible work ethic, have decreased anxiety and stress and even earned amazing scholarships through their academic accomplishments.
Data even shows the positive impact of student skills on student success as habits determine performance and organization directly impacts learning.
Moreover, all learning types are supported through Inspired Learning Systems, including Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.
So why do students struggle?
At Inspired Learning Systems, we have found three key reasons why students underperform:
They fail to recognize the importance of creating a strategy for completing their work.
They don’t have study skills that lead to success
They suffer from anxiety and a sense of overwhelm due to lack of effective study skills and knowledge of how to study.
What can you do as a parent? Let’s dive into the 3 Secrets To Supercharge Your Child’s Learning.
Secret #1 The Magic of Systems
Systems are a great way to set your child up for success! Here are a few we recommend at Inspired Learning Systems
Homework Notebook
The homework notebook is an absolute must for homework planning and to relieve stress and anxiety. It also helps rid your student of subconscious blocks.Month-At-A-Glance Calendar
No matter the age of your student or the task at hand, planning ahead is critical for success.Goal-Setting
Goal-setting provides direction and holds your student accountable. It also helps students become increasingly motivated.
Secret #2 The Brain Loves Hard Work
Think of your brain as a muscle. The more you exercise the brain, the more you learn and grow. Like the rest of your body, your brain needs a break between workout sessions as it tends to go through the process of Learning, Forgetting, then Relearning.
The brain loves intervals and learns best when it has enough time between sessions. At the end of the day, hard work raises your I.Q., which proves you are capable and able to increase your knowledge and become smarter.
Once students realize that their brains like the challenge of hard work, their perception towards their work changes. Struggling to learn doesn’t mean they are not as smart as their peers, and once they understand this, their perception towards their workload changes.
Mindset is everything and it is critical that your student maintains the right perceptions about hard work and their ability to succeed.
Secret #3: The Amazing Power of Hooks
“Hooks” are the pieces of information in your brain that it has gathered over the years and act as a tool for your brain to learn. Memories, such as mental pictures and ideas can act as hooks and students can utilize hooks inside study skills to create new associations and help increase I.Q.
There are several different ways to create study skill “hooks.” Here are few recommended by Inspired Learning Systems:
Elaboration:
Create a worksheet on different subjects or topics you know and/or have learned about and expand on new concepts around the subject.Mnemonics:
Developing phrases to represent topics. As an example, below is one way a student can remember how the planets line up in relation to the sun:
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos can remind students of the order our planets from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune (Pluto)Have a Pre-Reading Checklist:
Make notes during your reading activity to track pictures, headings, and thoughts as you read, main ideas of the chapter and questions the student might have. Recording these notes while reading helps to lock information in and process the input.
